This fantasy film is the eighth and last installment of the “Harry Potter” series. The movie follows Harry Potter’s journey, as he tries to destroy Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes. This was the highest-grossing film of 2011 raking in over $1 billion.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
This science fiction action film was released June 23, 2011and is the third installment of the “Transformers” series. The movie is also based on the toy line of the same name. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Josh Dushamel and Tyrese Gibson, the film grossed over $1.12 billion.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1
This romantic fantasy film is based on what’s known as the novel named “Breaking Dawn.” This film is the first of a two part installment of the series. Despite mostly negative reviews from critics, this was the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, grossing over $712 million worldwide.

The Hangover Part II
The sequel to the immensely popular comedy, “The Hangover,” this was one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. During its run at the box office, it was the highest-grossing R-rated comedy. Released May 19, 2011, the film has grossed over $581 million worldwide.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
This fantasy adventure film is the fourth installment of the series. Starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, Captain Jack Sparrow is on a quest to find the fountain of youth. During its run, this flick set records for the fastest film to gross $500, $600 and $700 million. It grossed over $1.04 billion.

Fast Five
Also known as “Fast & Furious 5,” this action film was released in the United States on April 29, 2011. This installment deviated from the street racing theme and focused more on car heists. This was the highest-grossing film of the franchise bringing in over $626 million.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
Starring Tom Cruise, this action film is the fourth in the series. Becoming a critical and commercial success, this was both the highest-grossing film of the series and Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film. The movie made over $694 million worldwide.

Cars 2
This is a computer-animated action/comedy film. The movie chronicles a race car and tow truck as they head off to compete in the Grand Prix but get sidetracked by espionage. Even though it received mixed reviews, the movie grossed over $559 million worldwide.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
This mystery/action film is a British-American hybrid. Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law revive their roles from the original movie. A commercial success, this movie brought in over $545 million worldwide

This superhero film is based on a Marvel comic book character of the same name. The film tells the story of Thor, a prince, who was exiled from his home to Earth, where he forges a relationship with a scientist. This film grossed over $449 million worldwide.
